Van is leading the Plant Pathology and Host Plant Resistance Group at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). Her group aims to protect rice from bacterial, fungal, viral and phytoplasma diseases by developing genetic and microbial solutions. By enhancing resistance through resistance genes and beneficial microbes, it reduces yield loss and pesticide dependence. Her work promotes sustainable rice cultivation, safeguards the environment, and reduces agriculture’s carbon footprint, contributing to long-term food security
