Laura Ziems was awarded a PhD in barely leaf rust genetics from the University of Queensland in 2017. As part of her PhD she characterised and mapped Rph24 a gene conferring adult plant resistance to Puccinia hordei (leaf rust) in Barley. She was appointed as postdoctoral research associate of cereal molecular genetics as part of the Australian cereal rust control program (ACRCP) at the university of Sydney plant breeding institute (PBI) in 2020.
