Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry aims to build a more sustainable and prosperous Australia through biosecurity, production and trade in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries. We focus on 3 objectives:
- Sector growth – Supporting Australia’s agricultural sector, including the food and fibre industries, to be increasingly prosperous and internationally competitive in an ever-changing world.
- Sector resilience and sustainability – Increasing the contribution agriculture, fisheries and forestry make to a healthy, sustainable and low-emissions environment.
- National biosecurity – Strengthening our national biosecurity system to provide a risk-based approach and an appropriate level of protection for Australia’s people, our environment and economy.
We manage biosecurity risks to Australia to protect our multi-billion-dollar agricultural industries, our environment and our way of life from exotic pests and diseases. The way we manage biosecurity risks is underpinned by good science, supporting informed decisions and policies. Across Australia, our scientists work hard to identify, assess and respond to plant and animal pests and diseases to keep our industries and country safe.
We employ a diverse range of people from a wide range of scientific disciplines, including agricultural scientists, molecular biologists and plant pathologists, to make a difference in protecting Australia’s biosecurity.
